What am I?

Akshay Gopalakrishnan

As I continue the job search I keep asking myself a simple question. What kind of designer do I want to be? Ok, maybe it's not that simple. Actually, it's quite the opposite. I'd rather ask myself whether I want a burrito or a taco. Anyways, I feel like all graphic designers have had to ask the same question. Its not our fault that graphic design is such a wide field. We are creative people seeking to do creative things which happen to be related to the graphic world. I graduated with a BFA in graphic design from the University of Georgia. The design program is focused on print design and is said to be a really good program. So after graduating from the University of Georgia, I came out as a print designer. However, I felt that i was unprepared for the "real world" because honestly print designers are not in demand. Therefore, I enrolled at Tech Talent South and will be taking a Web Design course that will teach me how to build a site from the ground up. So along with the Adobe Creative Suite under my belt (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, AfterEffects), I will also have HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and JQuery. Hopefully this would prove to be useful as I apply to more jobs and hopefully land a job that has me doing something creative as well as fun! During my research on the different types of graphic designers out there, I came across FastCo's article on UI vs UX design, which can be found here: http://www.fastcodesign.com/3032719/ui-ux-who-does-what-a-designers-guide-to-the-tech-industry . The article breaks the role of different design jobs down in a clean and easy to read format. It helped me to understand the difference, however I still do not know what kind of designer I was to become. I guess only time will tell.
